In its lower reaches, the Deerfield runs through a much flatter landscape than the hilly terrain of its mid and upper reaches. There are fewer rapids as the river assumes a more uniform slope with a U-shaped channel. Although the three major mechanisms of erosion, transfer, and deposition of sediments and other materials can occur any place along a river system, in this section the river is more likely to be a net depositor of sediment during high flow periods.
