Cold River

These photos were taken from a vantage point approximately 10 feet above the river, which has carved into the banks beneath this spot, creating a small cliff. The slope is held in place primarily by the root system of the trees along this trail.

Roots can be seen on the left, holding in place several trees that are now perched several feet above the the river. This is a spot ripe for further erosion in future high flow events.

The log jam seen on the far shore and the large boulders resting on what is now dry bedrock are evidence of the river's ability to erode, transport and deposit materials during  high flows such as those that occurred during tropical storm Irene. The Cold River is just out of view, below the image.
