The Deerfield River at Mohawk Trail State Forest, a few hundred yards above the confluence with the Cold River. This view can be seen along the nature trail at the State Forest. A good-size meadow, behind the this vantage point, provides floodplain storage during high water. This this storage capacity helps protect infrastructure (roadway, railroad and utility lines) that lies near the river above the far bank. During flood conditions, the river will spill out over the floodplain, leaving the infrastructure intact, which is what happened during Irene.
