The Chickley River caused significant damage during Tropical Storm Irene. It washed out several portions of West Hawley Road (Route 8A) in Hawley. The river takes a sharp bend at this location (about a mile downstream of the town garage), and took a good length of the road with it during the storm. The evident erosion across the river, on the inside bend of the stream (usually a place of deposition) gives an idea of how high and damaging the flows were during Irene. This image was taken in June of 2013 during a period of fairly high flow.
