Route 2 Damage and Cold River Slump

A portion of Route 2 in Charlemont, which contained a rest area, was washed away by Tropical Storm Irene.   Aerial photos (taken from Google Earth) before, just after, and in 2015 show the changes Irene caused.  Closeup photos of the small landslide across the river, on the north bank, show how the river processes are continuing over time.

This image from Google Earth was taken in 2008. The intact section of Route 2 can be seen as a straight line just south of the Cold River.

Route 2 and Cold River in September 2011, days after Irene hit. The damaged section is in shadow, but about 300 yards of Route 2 is gone.
